About SpanishMED

My name is Perla and I am a critical care nurse with a passion for teaching. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I know what it is like to translate for those around me. Like many children of immigrant parents, I was in charge of translating legal documents, parent-teacher conferences, and medical visits. In clinical practice, I often get pulled into rooms to translate for patients and their families. 

During my final year of nursing school, I created SpanishMED to teach medical Spanish to the world of medicine. Our mission is to narrow language barriers in health care by educating, empowering, and giving our audience the tools to learn and effectively communicate in Spanish. 

My background in nursing has allowed me to gain clinical experience in different sectors of health care including medical-surgical, obstetric, psychiatric, public health, and critical care. Besides my clinical background and linguistic upbringing, I obtained a Medical Spanish Language certification and continue exploring other educational opportunities to strengthen my discipline.
